Supervised parenting is intended to support reintroduction or ensure safety while preserving a child’s relationship with both parents.
Unless a protective or restraining order is in place, parents will see one another at exchanges. These brief interactions are important for children to observe cooperative and respectful communication between their parents. During exchanges, parents may speak directly with one another regarding items related to the visit. Custodial parents should not send the child with snacks, meals, or supplies, as it is the responsibility of the parent being supervised to provide food and drinks; a water bottle is acceptable. Any allergies or sensitivities must be disclosed and discussed at the exchange to ensure the supervising parent is informed. Custodial parents may not surveil, monitor, or remain near the supervised visit and must stay no less than one mile from the visit location. Bathroom use is only supervised when the parent and child are of opposite genders or when there have been allegations of sexual abuse. Gifts are permitted during visits, and multiple locations within walking distance may be used. Drive time for supervision services is billed at a discounted rate of $25 per hour.
